I know I know…the puns…
I’ve been reading a number of posts lately regarding the upcoming corvette, and I was contemplating buying into it if/when it came out, and I realized that a corvette might be getting in the “I have to play with SOMEONE else just to fly” territory. A corvette to me seems like a good idea between long time in space, firepower, and shipping room. In theory at least.
So I’m curious as to what size vessel you would see yourself using the most. I definitely see me in larger ships either moving large hauls in my Hull-E, running scans in my Carrack, or patrolling territory in a corvette+ size ship (I plan on spending a lot of time on the javelin…which we haven’t named yet!)
So….how big is too big? *cringes*…sorry…had to.

Depends on your goal that you would like to achieve with the ship. The retaliator is already suffering in effectiveness when it does not have a full (player) crew, especially when it is supposed to fight other ships. However, if you only need to transport stuff you probably need less crew members or could even suffice with npc crew only. Furthermore, I am fairly confident that corvette class ships and larger will be focused on group play, thus be less effective if you fly solo or with npcs.
I also wonder how effective things like exploration are going to be without a full crew. I imagine everything will be similarly balanced like in EVE, where you need more people with bigger ships to venture out further into space, unless you’re a slippery little devil, like an info-runner. Only in this case more people does not equate to more ships, just bigger ones.
Flown the freelancer and warden in freeflight week… big ships no ty atleast in arena commander
Honestly, I would like to end up with a carrier or dreadnought, that would have a battle group centered around it. I actually love the idea of doing spread sheets and figuring out the bills. I mean fuel for the primary ship (refueling the fighters) the ordinance and a whole bunch of other stuff like repair materials. having to organize armed supply runs to resupply the battle group which would be to large to run back to a star base when the gas tank is half full.
I imagine based of how Mr. Roberts has described the game he is making. I assume it will be a very rewarding experience. Even if trying to make sure you know players around the world so you can maintain a 24 hour Combat Air Patrol. Some times having to pay players (in game) to watch over the expensive ships during unpopular playing times. I.E. 4AM- 10AM.
I like the big ships I want to work with other players to be successful I think it will make it more rewarding and fun. So i think the really big ships like the javelin will be extremely interesting having so many people working together. That being said I will still have a small ship or two so I can go solo when I want.
What do you think about the multi crewed science vessel? A lot of people working together, but how do you do science in a game like this and have fun team work?
Do you mean the endeavor if my memory serves me right? If it is then I think it will be useful in a battle group for the hospital module is says it will have. In regards to the science I’m not sure to be honest. I would like SC to detail that out a little more but will probably have to wait till the ship is in the final stages of production to find out.
Yes the Endeavor. It is very true, they are a mobile spawn points. At least the hope class hospital variant. which will be useful in large scale battles depending on how vehicle spawning works.
Example my Retaliator with crew of 5 was destroyed. The crew spawns on the Endeavor and is shuttled by the front detachable section to the nearest Idris. Assuming the Idris can re-spawn small ships. CIG has been vague about this. Then we would span ships that aren’t currently being rebuild/replaced by insurance which we know will take time. Not to dive too far into theory craft.
That’s the idea of it yea, this counts the most as boarding parties though atleast for those they explained it. If you’re on dogfighting duties you’re kinda screwed with the Endeavor atleast, the Idris or Bengal would be more suitable as dogfighters are on those ships.
They’re thinking a lot about making everything feel as real as possible. Doing so with “spawning ships” won’t be as real, so if your ship gets destroyed your side is going to be at the losing side really quick.. I do believe they plan to go about it like that.
The spawning ship would be real if based on the idea that you were ejected immediately before the ship exploded and the spawning ship is just the ship to pick you up as your floating in space and you are stuck on that ship until you are taken back to a place to access your ship.
I would like to see a resplendent with time penalties, maybe you have to use your mustang for the hour because your hornet is being replaced by insurance. Other wise people with money that can afford to just log off and switch to one of their many accounts. Rejoining the fight in a fresh fighter.
Respawn* please forgive auto correct.
I feel they shouldn’t have respawns and as @trigger31 says, it should be still floating in space (yourship) and you pick up a fresh one at a carrier.. or something along those lines.
The ships should be physically on the carrier, respawns can happen but only rejoin a ship with a repaired one or something.
I really wonder how they’ll work this out.
Yes @taeja. @trigger31 is correct about the “eject/ being recovered” That is the fluff behind the hospital respawn according to CIG. The idea being each time you have one less limb and are more cyborg until that no longer works and you die forever, being replaced by your heir who gets all of your stuff.
What we don’t know and CIG probably has not figured out yet, is how long it takes to respawn, how many times you can before dying permanently, can you pick the spot or is it automatic, will your character have blurry vision and be sluggish for a while after spawning.
We also don’t know how they will get back into the fight? If they have to take a shuttle back to a star base systems away and get a ship there. Then fly all the way back. If so it wouldn’t be helpful to respawn close to the fight. If the Idris can’t spawn ships with a mechanic like. One ship every 5 minutes for each of the 3 spots. Assuming the player owns other ships to spawn or the organization owns extras or maybe you have to pre-load and de-materialize spare ships. It begs the question how does the player get back into the fight?
It should take time, you did die after all and the fight needs to progress. At the same time players are the biggest assets and they need to get back into the fight in a reasonable amount of time (with out having to pay for multiple accounts to log into). I mean I don’t want to have to buy HEAM2, HEAM3, HEAM4….. HEAM10, to leave logged off in a ship, a system away every time we plan for a big fight.
The problem of making a game unlike any other is making a system that works like any other and having it be fun an balanced.
